With The Father, Florian Zeller brings his play of the same name to the big screen, in this emotional story about a man who’s suffering from memory loss & refuses any of his daughter’s assistance. The film stars Anthony Hopkins & Olivia Coleman, as they marvelously play father & daughter.
The film is nominated in 6 Oscar categories, and with good reason: It is a spectacular film that’s beautifully written in a way that enables the viewer to follow through with the difficult situation that Anthony is living in, by giving us a plot that’s structured in a way that it’s made to feel like a Deja Vu of sorts as the film presents Antony’s early stages of his disease.
As this article from Harvard states, “People in the early stages of the disease start to lose things, forget once-familiar faces, and struggle to recall recent events.”, and this is precisely what The Father deals with through its main character, Anthony. The script plays out with these symptoms which alter Anthony’s perception of reality and merges them within the story’s structure so that the audience can witness firsthand what he is living.
This way, the script fantastically enables the audience to experience sympathetically his confusion, impotence & most importantly fear & loneliness he is feeling at the moment, mirroring what patients of Alzheimer’s suffer day after day. All of this is made even more effective thanks to Hopkin’s & Coleman’s all-too-real & captivating performances. Riz Ahmed was our favorite for taking home the Oscar for his job in Sound of Metal, but now I’m not too sure about it. I want either him or Hopkins to take the Oscar statue, and here’s why Hopkins made me doubt so much about my favorite contender:
Hopkins’s masterful performance deserves all the praise he’s receiving and more. He delivered something unique in this film that will mess you up emotionally thanks to the way he transmits vulnerability with such raw emotion. This was one of the purest performances in a while, and will most definitely awake something in the viewer. I myself somewhat linked Anthony with my late Grandfather, who, even though didn’t suffer the same disease, struggled with a severe disease that only made him so weak, vulnerable, and prone to behavior that was so completely different from his usual strong & energetic self.
I haven’t cried this much in ages, and the last film I remember that made me literally sob was The Bridge to Terabithia all those years ago. The Father made me cry uncontrollably even after it was over. And I wasn’t alone; I quickly talked to other friends who saw the film during the same weekend and they told me that they experienced exactly the same. That last scene will melt your heart.
This is a great film that everyone must watch. It’s short and greatly paced, so the film will fly by. However, watch it at your own expense if you’re right now dealing with similar situations in your life. Watching the film may very well be a great way to release emotion, but may be too painful if your situation is recent or has too much similarities.
