Based on the book series of the same name, the Fear Street trilogy is a teen-horror slasher that’s set on neighbor towns Shadyside & Sunnyvale, as the witch-curse that’s been haunting the former strikes back with yet another mass murder.
The trilogy centers itself on Deena, a Shadyside girl that inadvertently caused her ex-girlfriend to be entangled with the curse, while also jumping years, as it tells the story of how the curse was born, & how two of its mass events affected Deena & the other characters.
This is Netflix’s newest attempt to grasp its subscribers in the horror genre, and the Fear Street trilogy has proven to be a fan favorite on social media. We took the task of watching the three films and see what was the fuzz all about, and we were actually surprised by its outcome, for better AND for worse (depending on who you ask on the team, and which of the three films we are talking about).
Let’s quickly review one by one and conclude with a final verdict around the trilogy.
Fear Street: 1994
1994 is the first film, and straight of the bat, I’ll tell you that it’s the weakest of the bunch.
It’s cringy, badly acted & plainly full of plot inconsistencies. Even though it was somewhat entertaining, funny & baited our interest in the mystery behind its plot, the film was completely underwhelming.
I mean, many of the moments were plainly stupid or unearned, or flawed in logic. I don’t like to thrash films, but man this film doesn’t allow me to say much more.
Fear Street: 1978
In 1978, the additions of Gillian Jacobs, Sadie Sink & Emily Rudd were very welcomed & helped elevate the level of the trilogy’s performances, which were pretty bad in the first one. This film is where things get interesting, and where it now feels as a proper slasher with a more consistent & interesting story. It still isn’t a scary film per se, but it has a good amount of dread that follows the main characters all around.
One thing that came up to our minds, is that it’s quite weird to feel how to sides of a city are so separated. It feels pretty inorganic (the good thing is, that this is properly resolved in the 3rd film). We know that aside from the curse, it also has its thematical reasons to be the way it is, but the way it is shown so explicitly in this film feels almost caricaturesque.
Aside from this, and some other nitpicks, 1978 prove to be a good watch. It was what we initially were looking for when deciding to watch this trilogy. I could even venture to say, that if you are just in the mood for a classic slasher, but aren’t interested in the whole trilogy, or don’t want to invest so much time in a story, that you could watch only this one. Is the only one that could work well as a stand-alone film, and the only one that has any rewatchability value.
Fear Street: 1666
Even though the second installment of the trilogy feels like a more concise film, it’s in 1666 where Fear Street is at its best.
Its twisty & engaging origin about the curse & how it affected the cursed Shadyside & perfect Sunnyvale felt as a solid closure to the trilogy. It finally all makes sense, and it proves to be a satisfying series of events that define both sides before and after the climax of this film.
Folk horror is a difficult genre to master & this film thrived in it, even though it’s sadly only present during half of the film.
I would consider the second installment to be a better film than this one, but since the third is so important to the story, and actually created good closure, it has an edge over the second one. However, this film is not safe from plot inconsistencies or overlooks to actual logic. It does have some, but we’ll talk about it in the Rundown.
Rundown
If not for its sequels, & how the 3rd ties everything down so neatly, this wouldn’t be something we’d recommend. But the thing is, that the story of Sarah Fier & the way the teenage heroes discovered the mystery was an entertaining watch.
However, we are still bugged by its many plot inconsistencies or random logic flaws. There are things like, Sarah’s hand or her bones being just a few centimeters below the ground after being buried for more than 300 years that just don’t make sense. For instance, how did the architects & constructors made the Mall? Blindley I guess. I mean, how did they lay the foundations for the building without noticing that humongous labyrinth beneath it. Or how did they casually left a metal fence with direct access to it? I mean, I would understand that in the 70s they would overlook that when making a cabin, but even then they left it as a sewage system in one section, and in the other, they just left a ventilated metal fence in the middle of the floor of the main house of the camping site? It’s like they knew it would serve the plot in a couple of movies later on… sighs
I could ramble about many more plot points like this one, but this one was the one that bugged me the most.
Well no, I lied, there’s another big one. The films don’t even follow the rules they have previously set of how its world works. How come, in the first film, the reanimated killer corpses would kill everyone in their path, even if they aren’t directly in front of it, but later on, the plot’s logic says “oh wait, they only want Sam or Deena or whatever” and the characters could safely just stand by 1 meter away from them, completely unbothered. That’s what I like to call magical plot armor that randomly pops out when convenient.
But that’s pretty much it. As said earlier, if not for the second & third installment of the trilogy, this would’ve been a tragic review. But the fact is, that despite its many plot-holes & flaws, the trilogy became a solid watch. You can sacrifice yourself into watching the 1st one if that means that you’ll see the other two. Both are good films.
The trilogy isn’t in any way scary. Not a single friend or I was scared at any moment during the trilogy, but it still was a fun & interesting story to watch unfold, and indeed a good set of slasher horror films.
It won’t win any awards, but it provides an interesting mystery that’s satisfyingly resolved.
