Cherry is the latest Tom Holland flick brought to you by the first directing job from the Russo Brothers since their magna opera called Avengers Endgame. Returning after concluding such a big event is no easy feat, and it’s no surprise that they chose a genre so different as to radically redirection their career into new paths to explore and different creative scenarios.
And Cherry is indeed a completely different film from the rest of the Russo filmography. Cherry is dark and full of heavy themes surrounding PTSD, drug abuse & crime.
It’s whoever, very stylistic and visual and you can see their creative input as the magnificent job from D.P. Newton Thomas Sigel. One of the best things about the film is its cinematography and style which looks really aesthetic and shows real effort within each chapter of the film, which in turn, have a unique approach, tone, and style as if it were 6 different films into one (In this podcast, Thomas Sigel explains how he created this visually stunning film).
The story was good, although it could’ve been way shorter. We understand that it was extended to have a bigger connection to the characters, but the film could’ve easily been half an hour shorter, and still have the same emotional impact. Because of this added runtime, the first half of the film drags a little however it picks up the pace once Holland’s character joins the army. After that is a roller coaster of drug abuse PTSD and more that becomes an intense story as you can see the downfall of each character. Either way, this feels as a film that crammed more than one film into one.
And also, apparently being in a film with loads of narration has been something that Holland needs for a film to have for him to be in it, because this film, as The Devil All The Time, has a great amount on narration.
We have never been great fans of narration. Many films use it well, but some others don’t. This is the film that overuses narration as a means to guide the viewer through the story, and for the most part, it isn’t needed (as with The Devil All The Time, for which you can read our complete review by clicking here). Most of the narration comes in the form of4th wall breaks where Holland’s character gives extra information about the scenes, his intention, or whatever, like in Deadpool or House of Cards, however these two examples time it greatly, and don’t overuse it to lay out unnecessary exposition or commentary on the character’s feelings or intentions. Most of the time, in Cherry the viewer can read within the scene and the acting but they choose to include the narration anyways.
Holland’s performance was nothing short of great. It’s always a pleasure to watch actors break out of their current molds and stress themselves into demanding roles. I mean, Holland has always been great in other dramas and always shows his emotional range as an actor, but I think this has been his most emotionally demanding role yet. Ciara Bravo was also pretty good as the opposing lead to Holland, as she plays the girlfriend that eventually gets dragged to the same addictions her traumatized boyfriend.
The story is a series of unfortunate events and radical decisions in the first act that sets up a plot that’s doomed to fail from the very beginning. Not that in real life this specific setup is doomed for failure, but because this is a Hollywood drama, and a film with these underlying themes will most probably be a living hell for its characters for the rest of its runtime.
The film in of itself is great, but it ultimately becomes forgettable with low rewatchability value. I don’t see many people rewatching this film for its pacing inconsistencies and its above-average story. It’s really stylistic and has a visual aesthetic that will please many, but together with the great performances, that’s about it.
