This is a spoiler-free review of Space Jam 2: A New Legacy.
After 25 years from the last match of the Toon Squad, they are back. This time, they will help LeBron James form a team to beat a rogue AI that controls Warner’s servers, & ultimately get his son back.
We really, really wanted Space Jam 2 to be good, but, sadly this wasn’t the case.
First of all, this film felt more like a huge marketing video for Warner’s huge library of IPs, Nike, & Lebron James, than a film. I guess those easter eggs can be fun & exciting, & some of them in this film were great, but they ended up feeling pretty excessive. It seemed as if Warner Media was overly eager to sell us HBO Max and seal this film financially with big checks from Nike and a promise to LeBron that he would make tons of money from this. It felt ridiculous the number of times they made emphasis on his full name, as if they had to introduce the guy as a guest star every time he is mentioned with a clear & enunciated voice.
It had been a long time since I had watched the first Space Jam, so I watched it just after watching this film, as a control test to see if my younger self overly rated the film and if it really had all the sins & marketing ploys of this newer one. To my surprise, it didn’t, nor any of the negative things we will continue to talk about in this review.
We really love LeBron, & we hate to say something negative of him, but he should stick to basketball. Many athletes, and certainly did Michael Jordan, can handle the task of being organically in a film, but not him. He felt monotone & emotionless for pretty much the entirety of the film.
And don’t even get me started on Don Cheadle. He is an Oscar-nominated actor, who we admire and love to watch then and again, but his performance felt like he was out of his usual self. As if he was in a film he didn’t want to be in. Or maybe it’s just these types of roles that he just doesn’t fit in. Full-blown cringe.
The film was full of flat deliveries, weak dialogue, & an overly direct theme that’s was being reminded to us almost every second of the film. Space Jam 2 intended to be different than the original and aimed to add another layer of emotion by centering the theme on his relationship with his son, but ultimately the attempt felt lazy and made it feel as if there was no real emotional weight behind these efforts.
Many plot threads had no repercussions or felt as if they were watered down. For example, what was the point of transforming the Toons into a 3D version of themselves? To modernize the film? To change the pace? To have an excuse to burn its huge budget with CGI? I don’t really know, but during the transformation, it was made very clear that it angered the Toons and that it was something horrible to do to them. The A.I. even said that with that transformation they had become “real” but, nothing really happened. They were still able to do all their crazy stunts, and survive everything, as their 2D versions. So what was the point?
Although, not everything is bad in this film. It has its pros too: each and every one of the Toons was fantastic. They literally saved the film from being very much dull. Bugs Bunny was by far the best element of the film; he was as funny, spontaneous & as looney as ever.
We know we have to rate it as a kid’s movie, and that we must only watch it as something that its goal is to entertain little kids, but even while doing so, it falls flat. They tried to overcomplicate themselves, even though they still used the simplest of scripts and basically the same overarching plot of the previous film.
The 1st Space Jam, & many other kid’s films, have proven that you can have simple, cheesy & looney films & still be good, fun & entertaining. Being a kids film doesn’t excuse mediocrity in the plot, dialogue & thematic elements. Plenty of kids films don’t dismiss core story elements just to dumb it down for kids.
Plenty of kids films have their main purpose be to entertain kids, and they are still good films.
This one just wasn’t.
It felt like a nostalgic cash grab for fans of the 1st Space Jam.
