After what felt like the longest wait ever for a film to be released on theatres, we finally had the chance to watch ‘No Time To Die’, and we do feel that it was worth the wait.
In Daniel Craig’s last outing as James Bond, we meet him living a peaceful life with Madeleine, only for his past coming to haunt him once more sending him into a treacherous & dangerous mission.
In a film that’s all about how our past can influence greatly our present, Madeleine’s past becomes the lead focus, as the person who tormented her as a child comes back to complete his twisted vendetta against Spectre & fulfill his obsessive desires with her. This person is non other than Rami Malek’s character Safin, who takes the arduous task of embodying a Bond Villain.
Director Cary Joji Fukunaga had a serious job in creating the most difficult Bond film to execute in the Craig era. It isn’t easy to wrap up a five-film storyline and end said franchise in a high note. Overall, he did a great job. From the action style, how he handled the characters & especially the visual aesthetic, Joji Fukunaga managed to use what worked from previous directors (most notably Sam Mendes) and manage to make the film feel consistent with the previous entries. He also managed to push the actors into delivering the best performances of a Bond film after Skyfall.
However that’s not to say that there was a key element that we felt he wasn’t able to handle, which was the film’s pacing. The runtime of this film (2h 43m) hurts what could’ve been a film that contends for the 2nd place in the rankings of Craig’s Bond films. This is dully noted on the 1st & the 2nd act, where even though there’s enough action to keep audiences engaged, the story struggles to move forward as the story overcomplicates itself with numerous amount of setups for the story to gain traction (The second act felt so long, that my date actually fell asleep for a bit).
However, laying this pacing troubles aside, this is still a great Bond film. It doesn’t disappoint to bring the audiences with the key elements that fans expect from a Bond action film: The action is superb & greatly shot, with creative ways to have variety in each of its setups to keep the audience engaged, wowed and satisfied. The score by Hans Zimmer is undoubtedly the best of the franchise, building on what Thomas Newman and the others had previously created, but giving it a more personal & thrilling take which elevated the viewing experience. You also have in Malek, a fantastic Bond Villain, that even though he has less of a spotlight than others before him, he managed to become a chilling on-screen presence. And lastly, its bittersweet third act is one of the most solid & emotional wrap-ups in the franchise.
In the end, James Bond’s personal & professional storylines wrap up to deliver a fantastic goodbye to perhaps the most impressive Bond incarnation of all time. It’s sad knowing that this is the last time we see Daniel Craig as agent 007, however, his time with the character ended at the perfect moment.
There’s so much more that we would like to add to this review, because this film left us having lots of mixed feelings regarding the character. But speaking about it would spoil the story of ‘No Time To Die’.
