David Fincher’s newest film, Mank, is something else entirely from what you expect from the acclaimed director. But that ain’t necessarily something bad.
‘Mank’ talks about screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz, during the arduous process of writing the legendary film ‘Citizen Kane’ in the 1930s.
What’s most notable is the noir style that Fincher chose for the film. Everything from the sound design, the dialogue, the camera work & the overexposed lighting made this film feel like a 1930s flick. We absolutely loved the script intros for the changes in location and the flashbacks. You’ll even find cigarette burns and scratch marks in some frames as if this was shot on grainier film. The end result is a retro-styled film with modern brushes of newer cinematography here and there, which works fantastic for the film.
You’ll enjoy this film much better if you watch ‘Citizen Kane’ first, as most of the narrative behind ‘Mank’ is a parallel journey of flashbacks that inspired Mank in the present for his script.
Overall, the dialogue is upbeat & witty, which contrasts what feels as a slower-paced film that could’ve been a little less lengthy, as its plot feels like it drags a little if you aren’t as fond of classic cinema, however, it’s still an obviously great written story.
Although this film is not for everyone and certainly not what we think Fincher does best, this film shines with its technical prowess & the fantastic performances by Gary Oldman, Charles Dance, but most notably Amanda Seyfried, who in turn delivered what could most probably gain her a nomination in the following Oscars.
The film works great as Fincher’s love letter to the Golden Age of Cinema & to honor the true story behind Mank & Citizen Kane.
