The Marvel hit film Black Panther continues to inspire and continues to become a fan favorite despite being released two years ago. The film starred the late Chadwick Boseman who sadly passed away this year due to an illness, Danai Guirira, Letitia Wright, Lupita Nyong’o, and Michael B. Jordan. It was directed by Ryan Coogler and produced by Kevin Feige, under the production company of Marvel. The film grossed a total of $1.347 billion dollars and it received seven nominations and three wins from the Academy Awards.
The film is culturally rich, it showcases the colorfully unique African traditions and, in some way, it is modern. It depicts duality and balance. The two sides of the coin, one might say. Wakanda may have high-end innovations that made the world stare in awe and wonder but the nation never forgot to pay respect to their tradition and celebrate diversity. In the movie, it is noticeable that there are different tribes that make up Wakanda. They have different practices but they stand united once inside the King’s throne room.
And it is refreshing to eyes of the audience. Black Panther isn’t your typical superhero movie. It gives meaning to the African community and it’s empowering to them. Because everyone is a superhero, no matter what your race is, no matter what your sex is.
Another significant piece of this film is that it showcases equality among the sexes. It redefined gender roles and it is an inspiring film especially to women. It breaks down the wall of stereotype, that women should stay at home and be a mother. Instead, the film said, “No, women belong where they want to be.” If she wants to be a fighter and a warrior, then she should be. If she wants to be a scientist and innovator, then she should be. If she wants to be an advocate and defender of rights, then she should be.
Unlike the other Marvel heroes, T’Challa exudes a sense of calmness. A humble king, one should say. He isn’t your typical millionaire, genius playboy. But of course, he isn’t perfect, he has strengths and weaknesses. Compassionate and fierce. Cool and stealth. He is the kind if king who said less but he is active. He acts upon what he thinks is best.
Black Panther is somehow different from all the other Marvel films. T’Challa is a king, he is a ruler. The safety and future of Wakanda relies on him. He’s a hero in his own way and he is the kind of hero we need today. His true challenge was moving forward without forgetting the past, not Michael B. Jordan’s Killmonger, not Andy Serkis’ Klaw. In the end, he chose to be his own king, different from the traditional and conservative kings of the past.
He chose to welcome diversity, embrace differences, and open the barriers that separates Wakanda from the rest of the world. T’Challa knows that the world may know them for their futuristic and amazing inventions, made possible by the vibranium, he also knows that opening the barriers that separates them from the world also means letting the world discover their beautiful past and tradition. You can’t change the past, but you can change the future. You can always alter your future and bring your past with you. Your past defines you. T’Challa didn’t want to kill the past, in fact, he values it. He gives it such importance for he knows that the time may move forward, the innovations may move forward but their culture and traditions will forever define Wakanda.
“Wakanda forever!” the iconic motto that King T’Challa gave life and meaning. No matter what change Wakanda will go through, they will forever hold on and practice their colorful past and tradition. Instead of throwing it away to the edge of a waterfall, he held it dearly to his heart and found ways that could bring the past into the present and into the future.
Black Panther is the hero of the modern age. He battled not only the envious thief and his ambitious cousin but he also fought against the wave of crucial traditions that caused people to die. Embracing modernity and change doesn’t mean leaving the past behind but rather giving it the sense of respect and value that is worth sharing with the whole world. Lastly, this article shall serve as a tribute to Mr. Chadwick Boseman. He played an iconic and inspiring character that continues to touch the minds and empower everyone. May he rest in power.
