Ford V Ferrari by James Mangold (known for some pretty great movies like Logan and 3:10 to Yuma) has come back to the spotlight now with a relatively low budget and a very familiar premise: car racing.
We’ve had our fair share of racing movies, some terrible ones, another bunch of okay films, and some others that really stand out. Ford v Ferrari cuts the list to be in the top tier of the genre.
The movie tells the story of Carol Shelby and Ken Miles, two friends that are gonna build the fastest car for Ford, so they can finally beat Ferrari at Le Mans, a 24 hour race in France.
This movie is actually a breath of fresh air, its no sequel, remake, reboot, comic-based, etc. Its just the real life struggle between two guys against big corporations who are just looking for profit.
You can relate to the main characters (even if you don’t know jack about cars or racing like me) in the sense that they are really passionate about what they do; if they stopped it would drain the life from them, and there are big corporations who just want to suck that talent for the sake of profit.
The chemistry between the characters is great, the movie is surprisingly funny, the stunts and racing scenes are made in wide shots so you don’t get lost or confused about what is going on, and even if the movie is quite long, you don’t feel the runtime because nearly every scene feels either earned or necessary. Great movie.
