About Time tells the story of Tim (Domhnall Gleeson) in his journey throughout his young adult life, from the moments he meets the love of his life played by Rachel McAdams until a more mature stage of his life as a father. Well, the movie tends not to overcomplicate things, the rules are set so that people who time travel replace their counterparts in the past or present with the knowledge they acquired in their adventures. If they change something, they can go back to the future to see the results.
However, this power has its own moral dilemma: Do you use it to change favorably your life, or seek to help others?
For the first couple of years, Tim uses his power mostly to change his and his relatives’ lives in a positive way but soon discovers that this may actually have greater implications.
These implications can be either positive or negative. Sometimes, you can affect negatively other facets of your life, sometimes something unexpected changes, but sometimes, destiny finds its way back and becomes inevitable.
In a way, life is always full of trade-offs, and learning to weigh out the options is a skill one develops by maturing from previous mistakes. In real life, we don’t usually get second chances; changing the past is obviously not an option.
Tim learns a very important life lesson after experiencing all the trade-offs seen in the film, how these affect his life and the one of others, and especially when he learned that having a child meant that he can’t go back before it without heavily altering his present. This life lesson that his own previous decisions have forced upon him to realize and live happier, is actually the film’s theme and message: Every single detail of life is delightful.
His father taught him what he thought was the key to a happy life, but Tim not only embarks it but brings it to the next level: His father asks him to live every day normally and then relieve it while enjoying the little details, without the original worries and distractions of the first walkthrough.
However, by the end, after years of maturing & experiencing this lesson, Tim decides to take it a step further and stop time traveling for good, adding a third element to his father’s formula of happiness: enjoy every day while believing it’s your last shot at that day, ever.
That’s how the movie grounds its message for an audience that of course has no way of bringing back time. Showing how this ability, as powerful as it may be, isn’t necessarily the key of happiness or a way to solve your problems and those of everyone around you. It isn’t as easy as it sounds, but usually, the little things are what keep us moving forward, and possibly the key to a happier life in today’s environment. This life lesson isn’t new, nor it’s a groundbreaking approach to life, but the film’s way of delivering & reminding us of it, is done in a grounded & original way.
In the end, About Time serves as a friendly reminder to live the day as it was your last.
