2019 was a great year for Horror, so this category was a hard one to choose. Ultimately Midsommar had an edge above the rest. The movie is centered around a group that travels to Midsummer. The twist is that they happen to unknowingly join a pagan cult with sinister rituals.
Its perfectionist directing style and setting help contrast the beauty of the place & the OCD-like rituals, with the horror & creepiness of the cult. Midsommar is heartbreaking, unsettling and original. Also, Florence Pugh leads with a breakout performance worth the Award buzz.
