The best movie year of the 2010s was 2019, and for that, the Oscars 2020 are thankful.
While the back-to-back run of 2014 (Grand Budapest Hotel, Gone Girl, Guardians of the Galaxy, Whiplash, Interstellar, Inherent Vice, Birdman) and 2015 (Mad Max: Fury Road, Spotlight, The Revenant, Room, The Big Short, Star Wars: The Force Awakens) may have been a better one-two punch, 2019 felt like a procrastinator’s opus of ending the decade that was with several projects that’ll be discussed, rewatched, written and argued about through the capricious 2020s.
It’s a good Oscars year and with a good Oscars year comes a bounty of opportunities for the Academy to show just how unyieldingly pigheaded and oafish they can be. (For more articles surrounding this year’s Oscars click here).
The anonymous ballot that has made its rounds about the internet is prime “we know you’re letting yourself get excited about the Oscars 2020 may be being different this year, although they won’t be” positioning just a few days away from the ceremony.
Best Picture Rundown
Because I thoroughly enjoy partaking in activities that make my eyes go black and my blood seeth, let’s review this anonymous voters’ takes on the Best Picture category:
What the voter said about Little Women: “Little Women was badly acted and confusing, and I have no idea why they cast four British actresses to play American girls.”
Ahh, yes. I can’t think of one reason why the Brits would be able to relate to the female struggle of staking your reputation on your ability to marry rich or, even better, marry into some form of royalty. Also, Saoirse Ronan was born in the Bronx and Eliza Scanlen is Australian.
What the voter said about Jojo Rabbit: “Jojo Rabbit was cute, but I found myself unable to laugh about Hitler — I don’t think that’s funny.”
Kinda the point!
What the voter said about Marriage Story: “You don’t have an off-Broadway director and an off-Broadway actress living in a nice house with no day job.”
My stepmother, while visiting New York City, once watched a man and his partner strip naked on the sidewalk and rinse off with rainwater. How often is the Big Apple depicted realistically on the big screen?
What the voter said about The Irishman: “It was too long and too repetitive, and the reverse-aging did not work…Coppola got it right in The Godfather when he had different actors play the characters when they were young and when they were old.”
I, for one, greatly respect Francis Ford Coppola’s bold decision to forgo next-generation anti-aging technology in *checks notes* 1974 and love the tidiness of a *checks notes again* 300 minute runtime, a whole nine minutes shorter than that of The Irishman!
What the voter said about Ford v. Ferrari: “I really liked Ford v Ferrari — I loved the two actors and the moral of the story — and I wish they had promoted it more.”
Christian Bale was born in Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, Wales, UK, which I’m told is a very real location. A Welsh-born actor playing a British man is fine, though. They’re essentially the same place. Fun accents! But yes, still, the Brits playing apple pie loving Americans in that Little Women movie were too much!
What the voter said about Parasite: “…and I don’t think foreign films should be nominated with the regular films.”
The foreign idea of late capitalism is, again, foreign. We don’t have that foreign societal state here. We can’t relate to the idea of a growing wage and wits gap between the rich and the poor. Not in this America! They should put that with the foreign films! And who even reads subtitles?!?
What the voter said about Joker: “…it was actually a beautifully done film about mental illness, and I thought about it for a long time afterward, which is always a good sign.”
Letterboxd user Joao said it better than I ever could: “if you’ve never swum in the ocean then, of course, a pool seems deep.”
What the voter said about Once Upon a Time in Hollywood: “I was in L.A. in the ’60s, and I thought he captured that era perfectly.”
Congrats!
What the voter said about 1917: “…a very good but pretty straight-on story about the horrors of war.”
This’ll win.
This gives you an idea of why being hopeful about going into a ceremony led by these kinds of people is never a good idea. This leads me to my predictions, conjectures, and whatnot about the 92nd Academy Awards.
The Big Four Awards
Best Picture
Will Win: 1917
Should Win: Parasite
Wildcard: Joker
The dedication during the credits honoring Sam Mendes’ grandfather sold it to the Academy. It’s a good movie and certainly one you should see in a theater with the loudest speakers available.
You won’t walk away with much to think about from a storytelling perspective (it’s fairly predictable and, obviously, we know how the larger WWI story ends), but I did walk away thinking about my veteran family members and how war movies like this are the only way I’ll ever really get a taste of what they experienced, or connect with them despite being gone.
The hollow tin medals and resilient cherry blossoms metaphors are deep enough to sell this as more than a spectacle war movie, and I enjoyed those softer scenes.
All that said, Parasite should win. It’s the best movie of 2019, full stop. I won’t deliberate why it is, either. Watch it, watch it again, watch it again once more after that. Watch it as many times as you can. But, when it’s between a foreign social and societal satire and an old-timey, visually stunning war movie, the Academy will pick the war movie.
Joker is my wildcard, and what a god-awful metaphor that is. I didn’t hate Joker. It was fine. But it was greatly flawed in more ways than one. In short, I find it difficult to award a movie that people were scared to see in the theater on account of the fact that they were worried they’d walk out with bullet holes. But, it’s certainly gained enough traction to pull off a win here.

Will Win: Joaquin Phoenix
Should Win: Joaquin Phoenix
Wildcard: Jonathan Pryce/Antonio Banderas
Some people will say it’s a makeup Oscar for his roles in both Walk the Line and The Master, and I can see that, but don’t let that take away from his masterclass in Joker. He’s really, really good. And I’m absolutely stoked for the acceptance speech.
Jonathan Pryce was great in The Two Popes, which I really thought would see more love this year. It’s such an Academy-type movie. Antonio Banderas also shined in Pain and Glory, another underappreciated movie this year. Joaquin deserves this, but don’t be surprised if the Academy tries to stir the pot here.
Best Actress
Will Win: Renee Zellweger
Should Win: Renee Zellweger
Wildcard: Saoirse Ronan
Renee Zellweger has this win on a tee. She’s been nominated for Best Actress twice, never won, and is coming off of a six-year filmmaking hiatus. That’s a narrative the Academy adores. And, she probably should win for Judy.
If Saoirse wins, though, film Twitter is going to have a field day.

Wildcard: Anthony Hopkins
Pitt’s been campaigning hard, and this is a lock. Cliff Booth was probably my favorite character of 2019. And “Oscar-winning actor Brad Pitt” just rolls off the tongue.
It’s about as long a shot as there is this year, but if I had to pick a wildcard to come out of the woodwork, it’s Anothony Hopkins here.
Best Supporting Actress
Will Win: Laura Dern
Should Win: Laura Dern
Wildcard: Kathy Bates
Dern’s nominated for Marriage Story, but I’m not sure if her role in Little Women wasn’t better. Either way, this is her year.
However, I could see Kathy Bates pull this out a la Olivia Colman last year.
Best Original Screenplay
Will Win: Parasite
Should Win: Parasite
Wildcard: 1917/Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
If they won’t give Parasite Best Picture, they’ll give it Best Original Screenplay. However, I could see a 1917 full sweep, as dumb as that would be. However again, are they really going to let Tarantino leave the building without something of major significance? We’ll see.
Also, poor Knives Out. What a great movie that is. The victim of a stacked category and, again, a great movie year.
Best Adapted Screenplay
Will Win: Joker
Should Win: Little Women
Wildcard: The Two Popes
Incredibly intriguing category here. Joker will probably win. But, I can’t find one thing I don’t love about the way Greta Gerwig adapted Little Women, and I could see her taking this one home to make up for her Best Director snub. All that said, and as I mentioned before, The Two Popes is the type of movie that the Academy loves.
