Spike Lee’s newest joint comes in the form of a Vietnam War inspired story about 4 veteran brothers going on a trip back to the land that saw them scarred from war, to recover the remains of Norm, the 5th member of their squadron. While at it, they’ll also aim to recover the hidden gold treasure that they buried.

A Mix of Genres
For starters, Da 5 Bloods has all the style and authenticity of a Spike Lee joint. You’ll recognize some of his particular traits all over the place. He made a story about friendship & forgiveness that paces itself with a nice rhythm.
To describe what Da 5 Bloods can be challenging. The film is an overloaded mix of genres that combine for a unique film, that at times can feel like it points towards more threads than it can handle. It can be funny (especially Melvin & his elaborate insults), quite violent & also really tense.
To sum it up this film includes a dysfunctional father-son relationship worthy of its own drama, a PTSD trauma straight from a psychological film, a western-type treasure hunting plot, a coming-of-age-Esque friendship comedy, a social commentary, and the list goes on & on.
All this mixture of genres and tones can sometimes become confusing onto what reaction I was supposed to have about a scene: Was I supposed to laugh at that, hence the tone of the music & effects, or was I supposed to feel sad, as the performances & the situation called for? This happened to me only twice, but I couldn’t help but linger in thought about the actual intention of those two confusing scenes.
With that being said, Lee’s newest film generates many different feelings throughout the length of the film. It can be funny (especially Melvin & his elaborate insults) and quite violent at times. But most of all, it can be very tense. Halfway through the film, the plot thickens, the performances sharpen and the stakes are raised.
Da 5 Bloods Review Highlights
Lee focuses its theme with an underlying social commentary towards what the BLM movement is fighting for & provides the audience with Black History lessons, through montages & dialogue between its characters.
But as he also did with some of his past films, like in Blackkklansman, Lee explores the opposite side of his ideologies. This time though Paul, the protagonist (arguably), who Lee uses as a way to exemplify that not all members of a societal group have to think in the exact same way, contrary to what some people believe. The war left Paul as the most haunted of the Bloods. He became extremly wary of outsiders and accumulated a burden full of guilt & rage. As a result, he has a different political ideology than the other Bloods & an unhealthy father/son relationship.
This conflicted persona also makes Paul become the most interesting character from the film, who was powered up by a great performance from Delroy Lindo. People are already backing him up for an Oscar, but in my opinion, it’s still too soon to judge. Although with so few films being released in 2020, his possibilities can become quite high.
Score: 7/10
This movie’s heart is in the right place. Da 5 Bloods explores the strong & complicated bond between a group of friends with shared past trauma, and how this has affected their whole lives. It is without saying that the film is perfectly cast & the chemistry between Da Bloods & Paul’s son is undeniably high.
Its overload of genres hurt its score a little but ultimately is a solid film.
