Written, Directed, and Edited by Jimmy Bontatibus, A Muse is a film like no other. Starring Mersiha Husagic, Miriam Rizea, Rares Andrici, A Muse makes the audience instantly drift off to a journey from Bucharest to Hamburg via Paris, intertwining three timelines between 1961, 2015, and 2018, and drawing on the history of Nouveau réalisme.
Bontatibus revealed that he traveled between Germany and Romania over the four years of making A Muse, interacting with crew and cast of distinct cultures and languages. The film is unique in every aspect. The extraordinary cast and crew elevates the audience’s expectation to the next level. Adrian Iurchevici and Roxana Reiss has phenomenally portrayed the film’s essence throughout every scene through their immensely outstanding cinematography.
Jimmy along with the cast and the crew, has done an extremely splendid job in keeping the audience at the edge of their seats till the very end. Jimmy digs deeper into the movie as he unveils insights about his recent project in an interview with The Epilogue.
Hello Jimmy! Thank you for joining us at The Epilogue! What can you tell us about your recent movie- A Muse?
Thanks for having me! A Muse is a film about a Bosnian-German aspiring dancer and a Romanian documentary filmmaker, several years removed from one another, and how their stories are intertwined by a volatile young man obsessed with the artist Yves Klein. It’s film about the intersection of art and life, and how they can both voluntarily and involuntarily dictate one another.
What was the initial process like? What was the inspiration behind this movie?
I had learned about Yves Klein and his Anthropometries performance in a high school art class about six or seven years ago, and I thought it was absolutely incredible, and I felt there was a story there, with the art and gender politics were still ripe for dissection. Of course, that would have been a period piece set in France in the early 60’s; a type of production scale I’ve not yet had access to in my career. I later moved to Europe for film school and ended up dropping out and making my first feature called The Life of Flowers with a Bosnian-German actress named Mersiha Husagic.
Before shooting the film, I visited Mersiha in Hamburg and fell in love with the city and her community, and I decided to plug this Yves Klein film idea into a modern-day setting and link the performance to more contemporary ideas, such as how dating manifests itself today. That led to several years of writing, where we were constantly rewriting and shifting the film based on what was happening around us in the world, up to and through shooting.
What was the idea behind the name- A Muse?
The title actually comes from a Constantin Brancusi sculpture, who was a Romanian sculptor who traveled west and worked in France. As to how it pertains to the film, you’ll have to see to find out!
Did your initial visualization of the movie match with the final outcome?
Not entirely, but in a positive way. Due to the shoestring nature of the film, we very quickly learned we couldn’t be inflexible in our vision, and we had to be open to what the elements were going to throw at us. This resulted in a malleability that I believe helped the film grow from its written, two-dimensional vision, because we allowed the world in. The final film still felt true to the vision, though, because we went in with a clear goal, aesthetic plan, etc., and we didn’t lose focus, but just allowed the film to evolve based on our real-life situations while shooting.
What challenges did you face during the making of the film?
The type of movie we were trying to make — two countries, three languages, who knows how many locations — isn’t really meant to be made on the scale that we made the film on. We routinely lost locations, had translation issues, actors unable to show up to set, you name it. But we stayed true to the film’s core and just rolled with the punches otherwise.
What can your fans expect from your future projects?
As to what they can expect, we’re trying to reconfigure our next film for quarantine-friendly filmmaking practices, and we’re hoping to shoot that later this summer. Like on A Muse, there’s so much that’s out of our control and we’re trying to embrace the obstacles and limitations and use them to our advantage. As to what they *should* expect? I really don’t know! I’m always going to try and make personal films that I feel have some reason to exist, and I hope they’ll be able to resonate with people.
What according to you was the best thing you experienced during the making of the film?
Just so much personal growth. I made new friends, traveled to unexpected places in the world, ended up in all kinds of situations that I never would have expected even just a few years ago. All of it. It wasn’t always easy — in fact, the whole undertaking surely took a few years off of my life — but I’d do it again in a heartbeat.
What’s the message that you’re trying to convey to the audience through your film?
I’ll let the movie speak for itself, but I will say that one of the inspirations for the film was wanting to draw a line between a historical event and characters generations removed from that said event, with no familial or direct tie, and being able to follow and unpack the relationship between the former and the latter. Hopefully we succeeded!
