This is a non-spoiler review for The Old Guard.
Following up their other extremely well-choreographed & filmed action thrillers, like Extraction (click here to read our review for it), Netflix produced a new film with a new twist from its own previous stories: Rogue mercenaries with superpowers.
The story is actually based on the comics created by Greg Rucka & illustrated by Leandro Fernandez, which was first published 3 years ago, in 2017.
The Old Guard, directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, gives the spotlight to Charlize Theron as she takes the role of a centuries-old immortal mercenary who, together with others similar to her, aim to protect their secret from the world, and thus, their freedom.
In the beginning, it started to feel as Extraction all over again: another film with a generic story & characters and just some great action covering it all up. However, as their mystery is unraveled & the stakes begin to rise, the movie becomes engaging & very entertaining.
The Review
Gina Prince-Bythewood’s direction is good, she handled the pacing really well & handheld the audience through the lore of the world created by Greg Rucka. However, the film’s storytelling structure could’ve been handled better. There are no real stakes until halfway through the film. Up until that point, its characters feel as generic superheroes fighting an inconsequential story with nothing to lose.
Up until its half, I wasn’t as remotely interested in any of its characters & the source of their powers, but the film got my attention after it introduced 2 team members which were previously part of the group. I’ll leave it to you to discover their fates so I don’t spoil what makes the film become more interesting.
Now, pivoting towards other grounds of the film, we have to talk about Charlize Theron. She is plainly amazing in this film, as she always is.
Theron has already proven herself with her talents to perform exhilarating action & fight sequences with her performances as Lorraine & Furiosa (Atomic Blonde & Mad Max: Fury Road). In this film, she turns into Beast-Mode and becomes a killing machine that has “forgotten more ways to kill than entire armies will ever learn.”, as said by Brooke, another man from the immortal group.
She acts way better than the script demanded her to, but that’s just her assuring her quality.
Also, Charlize is very committed, and her 3 surgeries post-filming prove it. She actually made this film become a better watch & become better than the average action thriller.
Speaking of action, the action in The Old Guard is brutal & very well filmed. Danny Hernandez, the fight coordinator did a hell of a job, together with Ackroyd & Reiker (D.P.s) to create immersively filmed fights that make you feel every single punch.
This doesn’t feel as the type of film that will become iconic throughout the years, but is solid enough to become an entertaining Saturday night watch for its solid action & Theron’s performance. If she makes a film, you need to watch it, there’s no other option.
As the movie hints at the end, this will become a superhero-esque franchise, & I can see myself watching its sequel.
