John Lee Hancock presents us his latest film with The Little Things, a mystery cop thriller that’s reminiscent of the good old films of the 90s, for its style & the fact that the film is set up in 1990. The film stars Denzel Washington, Jared Leto & Rami Malek. When you see those three names on the same film, you can seriously expect some great performances.
As a quick synopsis, the film is about Joe Deacon, who after years of been away in a county as a deputy, returns to L.A. to search for a serial killer that’s reminiscing of a case he had during his time as a detective. The killer on the loose is someone who targets young girls and has some weird fetiches over how he conducts the murders and what he does after.
The Little Things features the classic ‘semi-retired legend of a man with a troubled past, teams up with the promising rookie’ kind of trope. Deke, played by the one & only Denzel, couldn’t solve the case that is haunting him & now is trying to silence the ghosts of his past.
The mystery is there & is entertaining enough to never bore you, but it never quite hooks you or becomes something greater; the whole time you feel like you are watching a very forgettable flick. The film has some twists that once that you think about them, are sort of cliché, but aren’t as expected as one would think. And also it doesn’t hurt the film. Clichés aren’t synonymous with bad writing.
The best thing about the film are the good performances by its 3 mains, with Denzel being the obvious highlight. It also features some great cinematography by D.P. John Schwartzman, who has had a prominent career over the year, and in this film he doesn’t miss a beat.
The film isn’t a wonder or else, but it’s a good Friday night watch, with a plot that isn’t afraid to wander into dark places with its characters.
