It is almost October now and we are still in lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic. And even though that delayed many movie releases, some digital platforms gave us the bliss of releasing movies in their streaming service. Enters The Devil All The Time.
Some charged a little extra though ($30 for Mulan no thanks), but not Netflix, and their latest release really gave us something new to talk about.
The Devil All The Time is the latest psychological thriller with a stellar cast and performances, that brings us to the “golden age” in the United States, full of sinful, corrupt and plain evil characters.
Without further ado, let’s get right into the review (spoilers ahead).

The Devil Within
The movie follows a non-linear structure. We cut back and forth between characters at different points in their lives. However it is not one of those Nolan-esque movies, it’s easy to follow and the world-building is pretty narrow, which is not necessarily a bad thing.
We meet our characters and the towns they live in. Willard Russel is the first we meet, a WWII veteran that after witnessing the horrors of war, finds temporary peace in his religion and new family. However after his wife gets cancer and eventually dies, his traumas come to the surface, as he violently grabs his son to get him to pray for countless hours, and later sacrifices the family dog so that God would spare his wife.
Although the rest of the characters we will meet throughout the story are very different. They all carry a heavy load. They are victims of their own shadows.
Some use religion as a refuge, to find peace and solace for the tragedy they encounter. However these characters are often preyed upon by others who use religion to satisfy their urges or need for power.
The Tragic Hero
The story is reminiscent of older stories from either Greek Mythology and XX Century Magical-Realism literature. In which we follow a protagonist through seemingly normal landscapes and places, only to find that they have a life of its own, which by the end finds the demise of our protagonist, or at least the tragedy of loss and departure.
Arvin, played by Tom Holland, finds nothing but loss wherever he goes. Deceased mother, suicidal father and step-sister, attempt murder on his life, both by a psycho and the chief of police.
We see he only finds peace (at least temporary) the moment he takes a ride to a whole other town far away.
Verdict
While the movie has a great cast that certainly brings out their A-game, it is still rough around the edges.
Throughout the whole movie, we have an omniscient narrator that tells us whatever a character is thinking or is about to do, which instead of adding, subtracts from the viewing experience. I don’t need someone to tell me how a character is delusional and prays all day. Show me.
This narrative device was unnecessary right from the start because all we need to learn from the characters is shown, which is also a drawback. We spend a good amount of screen time with different characters, which would almost always be a good thing, but we still don’t get to KNOW them. Just their basic instincts.
Some character motivations end up feeling pretty stale or unfounded, which lessens the feeling of closure. However, the movie is still a fine watch.
Even if The Devil All The Time is not going to be the next big thing and probably won’t make any buzz in the awards season, it is a very good time. A gritty tragic story with not a lot of depth to it, but a lot of entertainment value, awesome cinematography, and some very suspenseful and jaw-dropping moments.
