First things first. If you haven’t seen ‘Train To Busan’ the Korean movie about a zombie outbreak, go check it out. Immediately.
Yeah we had a zombie craze than spawned countless forgettable films that reused the same tropes. But this particular film stood up from the rest to become a staple of what a good zombie film should be.
So when I heard a sequel was coming out, I was pretty skeptical to say the least. The first installment was just amazing. Having to revisit the world I was afraid it wouldn’t live to the expectations.
Boy was I wrong. Okay ‘Peninsula’ is not as good as ‘Train To Busan’ I said it. But it is a worthy sequel nonetheless, and here we are gonna explain why.
Peninsula: Synopsis
The movie starts with your cliched news segment to deliver exposition about what has happened since the first film. Not necessarily a bad thing, just well, maybe showing instead of telling would be better for these type of films. But it’s understandable sacrifices have to be made in order to keep the film from over expanding its runtime.
We learn that the virus was contained in the Korean peninsula. The rest of the world goes about their daily lives as always, and now nobody and nothing gets in or out of the forsaken country.
Then the story premise kicks in. Simple and straightforward. A couple of survivors from Korea that made it into Hong Kong are offered a choice. Go back and fetch a truckload with millions of USD to rebuild their lives. Otherwise keep living in slums and being segregated by society for being Korean survivors.
Review
The movie learned from its predecesor what to do with its characters without copying from itself. We are introduced to our protagonist, a man who became hardened and embittered by loss. But we also see him grow and learn the value of human life throughout the course of the film.
We also have our share of side characters, a perfect mix that keep the story interesting because we care for their well being, and they help our protagonist move towards his goal.
The antagonists are the group of people who survived and stayed in the peninsula. They developed a beast-like lifestyle in which they relish in watching human sacrifices as in the roman colosseum. They are the force of nature. The shadow part of ourselves that reveals itself when all societal norms are abandoned and we give in to our worst impulses. Our side characters diverge from the antagonists because they still value their own lives as well as the bonds they have with each other.
That is what makes the movie special. It draws a line between the people who still kept their humanity and protect each other, and the ones who became monsters themselves.
Peninsula: Veredict
‘Peninsula’ is a movie that has its share of flaws. But even if it’s not a perfect sequel, it really stands out as its own movie. Being in the Covid pandemic one can only stop and wonder. In the face of scarcity, disease, and poverty, are we the ones that will take the necessary steps towards the betterment of the world? Or are we gonna go full survival mode and show the worst part of ourselves?
If you are looking for a fun ride, full of some of the most creepy zombies ever (these are just full on olympic athletes you know), and maybe a couple of tears, you should totally check this one out.

Today, I went to the beachfront with my kids. I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She placed the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear. She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is entirely off topic but I had to tell someone!

he context in which a value comment is made is crucial. A statement that holds true in one context may not in another. For example, the value of time might be discussed differently in a business setting than in a casual conversation among friends.
An intriguing discussion is worth comment. I do believe that you need to
write more on this topic, it might not be a taboo subject but generally folks don’t talk about such subjects.
