Parasite came in 2019 and immediately swept the world from their feet. It is no secret that Hollywood has immense power and has acquired a lot of talent in every part of the movie-making chain. Directors, actors, screenwriters, editors, some of the most talented people work in Hollywood, so it is natural that they dominate the film industry and usually get the biggest box office returns and audience recognition.
However, throughout the years, we’ve seen the proliferation of new, creators, either from independent studios or from a completely different part of the world, that make some of the most amazing pieces of film that fortunately receive widespread recognition.
And so, the Korean film industry does it again. Written and directed by Bong Joon-ho, Parasite has won nothing but praise since it got released. Let’s take a look to see where the success stems form.
The film follows Ki-Woo (aka Kevin) and his working-class family, who live downtown in a semi-basement apartment. One day a friend of Kevin’s comes and tells him to substitute him as a private English teacher for a rich uptown girl because he is going abroad.
He rides the motto “Fake it ’till you make it” and surely gets the job. He then gets the rest of his family jobs for the rich Park family by scamming them. His sister becomes the art teacher, his father the driver, and his mother the maid.
It all seems nice and well until the story does a 180 and things go sour. The film is very on the nose with its social commentary about class, but not in a preachy way, but instead showing the full reach of the context each of the characters live in.
A similar movie (thematically speaking) by the same director is Snowpiercer starring Chris Evans (Go watch it, it’s amazing) also deals with this seemingly inevitable tensions between the rich and the poor, and both movies represent it physically as up VS down, and back VS front.
As we said before, the Korean film industry and especially Bong Joon-ho have been acing it lately, giving a breath of fresh air for audiences that might be getting tired of the big summer blockbuster trends that dominate movies and awards.
