We’ve all seen it. Men abusing their power, status, influences, to get what they want, most of the times at the expense of other people.
These men often seem intimidating, and for some, even aspirational. After all, who doesn’t want to be the guy who gets everything he wants?
That sort of attitudes made many impressionable young men want to always be on top. Always trying to be the guy with the most money, pretty girls, and overall, the macho reputation.
And it is this trend that gave rise to the popular term ‘Toxic Masculinity’. Which is a concept that tries to explain why some of the expectations society puts on men and specially boys, are actually harmful for their development.
We can identify what people call ‘toxic masculinity’ in many popular examples, both from movies and real life. But I would like to argue that the very term ‘toxic masculinity’ is flawed and incorrect. Not because there is no such thing as the values and attitudes that characterize what society identifies as a ‘toxic male’, but because we’ve approached this concept from the wrong angle.
Let me explain myself.

Aristotle’s Virtue Ethics
Of course we couldn’t begin to talk about virtues and vices without resorting to the greeks. Specifically Aristotle in this case.
He developed a philosophy called virtue ethics, in which a character must find the right balance between the excess or lack of a particular virtue.
For example, let’s talk about courage. A brave and courageous person is someone who faces the challenges that life bestows upon them and takes responsibility for his or her actions. However, if pushed too far, it could border into recklessness and foolhardiness. This a person who just launches himself into situations without assessing the problems first. On the other side of the spectrum, we have of course, cowardice, when the person does not stand up for himself or any ideals.
So, most of the times, when we talk about this so called ‘toxic males’ we are actually watching someone display an excess of what we would normally perceive as a virtue.
Let’s look at one excellent example in which the protagonist has to face an antagonist that embodies Aristotle’s virtue theory to a tee.
In the ‘Gladiator’ film, we see how our protagonist Maximus, is stripped of everything he has by an unjust emperor. Titles, properties, and even his own family is taken away. This of course is enough to reduce even the most masculine man to tears and even a shadow of his former self.
However, as the story progresses, we see how Maximus begins to regain one of the things he lost. Himself. He became a wanderer and a nihilist, not willing to keep enduring the tragedies of life. After what he went through, who wouldn’t?
But he finds a new purpose and decides to avenge the wrongs that were done to him. He reclaims his masculinity, and through that process he becomes a leader. Someone who does what needs to be done and is true to his word.
On the other side of the spectrum we have Commodus, the complete opposite of a real man. He is selfish, entitled, abusive, and whatever power and status he has is only because of the circumstances of his birth, not because of his own making.
Funny that even the names correspond to opposing values.
Commodus, depending on the translation could mean comfortable, complacent. This is the contrary to Maximus, which comes from Magnanimity, the virtue of being great in mind and in heart.
The Übermensch
Friedrich Nietzsche was a german philosopher who believed that once society abandoned the idea of God as a reason for morality, the rise of a new man should rise upfront. So he came up with the concept of the ubermensch, which could be translated to “beyond man” or “Superman”.
Someone that could represent the highest ideals of morality. The 10 primary attributes of the ubermensch according to Nietzche, are self-determina- tion, creativity, becoming, overcoming, discontent, flexibility, self-mastery, self- confidence, cheerfulness, and courage.
As you can see, none of these attributes resemble the concept of the toxic male, and this is because masculinity on itself is a virtue. You don’t say someone has toxic honesty, you say that person is rash, unwise, or careless.
You don’t say someone has toxic love because that is not love, it is possessiveness, or a whole bunch of insecurities.
So toxic masculinity is not masculinity at all, but behaviors that can vary in a wide range from rage, envy, shame, lust, greed, and more. The very word gentleman stems from one of the main attributes a real man should display, which is gentleness towards others.
We can see a clear example of an Ubermensch in Aragorn from the Lord of the rings. He is a man born with noble blood and a right claim to the throne of Gondor. He does not seek this power however, for the sake of it. In the end he gets the throne yes, but only because the people saw in his character someone with the true desire of helping others.
We do not see this much in the films, but in the books, he goes to great lengths to use his healing abilities to tend the wounded after the battle in the pleannor fields. And it is this gentleness and care towards others, which make him worthy of being a king in the eyes of the people. Even more so than his great deeds in battle.
Of course, ubermensch aren’t just born that way, even if they have natural talent and inclination for it. Two amazing characters that have this transition from “toxic male” into real men, are Oskar from “Schindler’s list” and of course Tony Stark from the MCU.
They both start as greedy men who only followed riches and women, but over the course of their stories, they discover they have a higher call. They are not obligated by anyone to do what is right, and those actions come even at the cost of what they used to vale the most such as money. But they do it anyways and become their heroes of their stories.
Now the beta male
We usually find that the so called “alpha males” are the ones that display the excessive side of the virtues we’ve talked about. However there has been a rise in recent years of the opposite side of the coin, specially in Hollywood, which would be the beta males.
Yes, every single role that Michael Cera has ever portrayed.
These men are as morally deprived than the “toxic” males, sometimes even more so. But why is that? Isn’t it better for a man to be harmless than to be capable of violence?
The answer to this question might not be so obvious at first, but it is a resounding NO.
And the reason for this is simple. Weak men might seem harmless, but are much more dangerous than strong men.
Carl Jung, a Swiss psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, and one of the most prominent figures among both psychologists and even philosophers, came up with a concept called “the shadow”
The shadow exists as part of the unconscious mind and is composed of repressed ideas, weaknesses, desires, instincts, and shortcomings.
The shadow is created out of our attempt to adapt to cultural norms and expectations. It is the archetype that contains all of the things that are unacceptable not only to society, but also to one’s personal values. It might include things such as envy, greed, prejudice, hate, and aggression.
The usual beta male, is a man who has not integrated this parts of himself to his personality. And we see many examples of these type of men in movies and TV.
These men more often than not, have all these feelings and thoughts repressed, and even think that they are ‘nice guys’ because they don’t oppress or abuse others. But it is not because of the kindness of their hearts, but because of the weakness of their character.
We can see this clearly in the case of Walter White, one of the most famous TV characters of all time. In the widely acclaimed ‘Breaking Bad’ series.
He starts out the story as a wimp. Someone who is discontent with his life and is mocked by everybody and respected by no one. He has a lot of hate and envy repressed, and slowly over the course of the story, we see him giving way to his violent impulses. And with every taste of power, he becomes more of a monster. He even says so himself by the end, when he admits he was never the good guy, he did the terrible things he did just because he felt like it.
Another great example of this is Tyler Durden in the film “Fight Club”. A man who feels so trapped and so far below in the social hierarchy, he only envisions a world in which the only way to reclaim his manhood, is throughout acts of violence that seek to overthrow the institutions he blames for his own shortcomings.
Men like these think of themselves as nice guys who feel entitled to everything. This is because it is way easier to blame somebody else for our problems, than taking responsibility for them. And that doesn’t mean that its easy or fair. Maybe the cards you were dealt are terrible, but everyone of us can choose whether to dwell ourselves in misery, (some external but some of our own making), or trying to do something about it to improve our situation and in turn, make this a better place to live.
Why do these archetypes matter?
Human beings have told stories since the moment we came to be. It is the prime mode of expressing our deepest emotions, ideas, and desires. Movies are an outlet for bringing these stories into life and let the viewer experience things from the point of view of someone from another country, gender, religion. Through movies we can understand concepts and ideals that are difficult to translate into just a simple definition.
The stories we love say a lot about the things we value as a society. Whenever we see a character (fictional or otherwise) that can bring out the best parts of the human psyche, we feel inspired. To give it all in our favorite sport or passion. To reach out and help those in need. To express your deepest feelings of love. To pursue your dreams. To stand up to the evils of this world and those who perpetrate it. This is why movies should try to create something that will stand the test of time and be remembered as something more than just a subversive, political, or unconventional stories.
So the concept of ‘toxic masculinity’ is something we should dispose all together. Because it inevitably predisposes people to think that masculine traits are a bad thing, when they certainly aren’t. Of course, there are a lot of toxic males and toxic people in general, but that does not mean we should kill the ideals that created some of the most remarkable people and stories we’ve seen.
If we destroy the ideal, who will we become then?
