With Wes Anderson releasing the trailer for the French Dispatch, we wanted to revisit his filmography and take a look at Isle of Dogs, a stop motion film centered around the exile of all dogs from Megasaki City, after an anti-dog campaign is held by the mayor.
For more context about the dog’s exile, here’s a brief synopsis about the motivations behind the Mayor’s actions. In this dystopian Japan, a new kind of flu strikes dogs, leaving the corrupt Mayor the perfect opportunity to exploit his family’s ancestral hate of dogs and banishing all of them despite the fact that a known scientist found a cure.
Isle of Dogs is Wes Anderson at its purest. The freedom that stop motion animation gave him is enough that he could figure out crazier & creative ways to exploit his ideas. He brought together an ensemble cast of celebrities that elevated Anderson’s material and made this cinematic experience even more enjoyable. Not without mention that the score behind this film is truly a delight to hear, which was in fact nominated for an Oscar (Isle of Dogs received two nominations: Best Score and Best Animated Film).
Isle of Dog’s story is pretty imaginative and original. It becomes an homage from Anderson to dogs through the relationship of Atari, a young 12-year-old boy in search of his dog Spots, and Chief, a stray dog who is in conflict within himself after not having learned the true value of friendship, loyalty, and love.
One already enters a stop-motion picture expecting great attention to detail and creative gags for amplifying the comedy. But man, this film is an intricate set of pieces sewn together for a remarkable viewing experience that also is a token of appreciation to Japanese culture.
Isle of Dogs is definitely worth your watch.
