Bo Burnham’s Eight Grade, is a coming of age story about Kayla (Elsie Fisher), an introverted girl that’s about to graduate Middle School and seeks to overturn what has been a terrible journey in it before she starts the next big journey called High School.

This movie is a really relatable piece of work. Most, if not all people that have lived through their adolescence, have experienced in a way at least one of the situations that Kayla had to endure. Whether it’s the self-motivations, embarrassment, awkwardness, self-loathing or even being irritable towards one’s parent, you can’t escape everything.
Burnham provides a creative narrative structure for the film, which becomes ad hoc to Kayla’s social environment. He uses Kayla’s YouTube blogs to express and contrast Kayla’s situation at the moment. This gives the audience a clear insight into what she’s trying to be better at, what she’s willing to try, and what her struggles are.
The movie is short, running at approximately 90 minutes or so, but this is a concise story, that is well-paced & acted, and always engaging. Burnham directorial debut leaves us with a feeling that the comedian turned director has a promising career in the Film Industry.

Kayla’s journey is an awkwardly empathetic ride, with a heartwarming final touch that will leave you with a sense of satisfaction. It is funny and serious precisely where it needs to be.
