Mads Mikkelsen stars in the Danish film titled Another Round & delivers an absolute gem of a performance in a story about a group of professors that starts an experiment on drinking alcohol during working hours to see how it affects their professional & social lives & test the Skårderud hypothesis.
The hypothesis states that humans have 0.5% less alcohol in their system than what’s optimal, so the group embarks on the task of maintaining that level of intoxication and see the results. As you may have guessed, after a few days of running the test & looking at the positive short-term effects, they start to escalate their consumption into drunker levels until they take it too far and decide to abort the experiment before it results in more permanent repercussions.
Another Round doesn’t take sides or gives a concrete conclusion to the experiment, but shows the positive & negative effects that it took on the group, and how, even if it did help some reconnect to their past lives, it wasn’t the permanent solution to it.
The casting choices were great. The four main actors showed amazing chemistry and it really felt as if I was looking at four real friends trying to have fun while at the same time drink in the name of Science. When the group was together, the film was funny and charismatic.
Although we would’ve liked to know a bit more about the other 3 professors, Another Round has its heart centered around Mads’s character, a man in his 40s that has allowed his life to become sloppy & boring, to the point of becoming invisible towards his family, students & friends. He is the first to accept to test the hypothesis because he saw the experiment as a means to solve his monotonous life, and thus his marriage.
The cinematography helps accentuate Mad’s performance with its personal close-ups & allows us to feel every inch of emotion he’s dealing with. One can easily say that this is one of the best, if not the best performance by a lead actor in 2020. It’s Mads turn to shine on Awards Season, and we sure hope he at least gets nominated for the major awards.
The end result is an eye-opening & captivating dramedy with a fantastic story arc about living life to the fullest. I mean, if the last 5 minutes of Mads’s character finally liberated & allowing himself to dance doesn’t put a smile on your face, I don’t know what will.
