Oh Sam, my dear Sam.
It’s really funny how true is that EVERYBODY needs a Sam in their lives. However, not any Sam, but Samwise Gamgee. The silent hero. A person full of pure heart and sheer will, that will push everyone around him to become a better version of themselves. A person who doesn’t mind being in the back seat, because all he wants is for the success of the greater good, not his own personal glory.
Now if you clicked on this article, it’s because you love Samwise Gamgee, and you love to hear new people argue about how he is the utmost hero of the LOTR saga, or maybe you just wanted to give this one a chance to convince you, or in the opposite case, to tell me how I’m completely wrong about it. Either way, it’s hard to deny that Sam is a fascinating character, in the books and the movies.
For a while, I had wanted to express my love for this amazing character in some sort of form, and today I finally sat down to write this article which I want to dedicate solely to him. I will write about his vast personality, his complete journey of growth, and his heroic acts. How he grew from a shy little hobbit to a strong-willed hero, and the best sidekick any protagonist would want by his side.

Sam’s humble & loyal personality
First of all, let’s talk a bit about Sam’s personality. The adjective that would best describe him is without a doubt, loyal. The way he unconditionally determined to aid Frodo on his trip, and even after he is wrongfully expelled by him, he seeks a way to continue aiding on the quest to save Middle-Earth.
However, there are many other great words to describe Sam’s personality: Kind, grateful, generous, honorable, humble, always genuine, and a team player. That’s not to say he is perfect with only good attributes to back him up. He can be quite jealous sometimes, mistrusting others, and not so open-minded.
From the very beginning, Sam proved to be a competent ‘servant’ (as Gandalf puts him to be for Frodo). He is very aware of the task that was appointed to him. It took plenty of courage for him to not run away and keep on his journey since he had always been afraid of the outer world and very lungful of the Shire. His loyalty and curiosity for the world proved to be stronger than his fears, stepping above and beyond to serve his master Frodo despite this great fear of the dangers ahead, proving to be one of the bravest hobbits.
This was also fueled by his childlike dreamer qualities, which despite his simplicity and homesick nature, make him very curious about the world. He dreams of meeting the elves and being part of the tales that really matter.
Sam is a shy hobbit of modest speech that keeps himself motivated through his journey by having the hopes to be there to assist and save Frodo when needed (he is at his most cunning when Frodo is in danger), but almost as importantly, to give the Shire a chance at survival. His loyalty to his kindred. But also, and perhaps up there with his utmost motivator, is the hope to be able to head back and court Rosie, the local bartender.
Even though at first glance he doesn’t much look like it, Sam was the toughest hobbit of the four from the get-go, with his most street-smart experience of them all, since the other three were more accustomed to their own social bubble. Sam is the least naive about second-guessing other people’s intentions, as one should be in a dangerous place like that and not go headfirst into anything or anyone who offers help. Then again, Sam’s not perfect. I’m not as blinded by my fanatism towards him. This over-carefulness can also go wrong, as his simple-minded mentality often misses the bigger picture when analyzing a means to an end (For example, using Gollum to reach Mordor).
Sam’s character traits also come with relatable flaws. Sam is insecure about himself, even to the last moment, even though he has then and again proven to be the better man in any room he is in. His humility is such, that he sometimes can become a sort of naivety, which may come deeply rooted in a subconscious indoctrination, or maybe because of psychological conditioning imposed by the society that surrounds him and his working-class background.
All in all, Sam is a focused, incorruptible hobbit. Even during the darkest of times. ‘The tales that really mattered’ speech may have played differently in the books and the films, but both serve the same purpose, to uplift Frodo and himself. Because that’s who Sam is, the optimist sidekick that will have your back and lead on, even in despair.
Sam’s Growth to become a Hero
Sam’s growth, as with many of the other main arcs of the story, goes a long way. Tolkien, being the master writer he is, was able to convey organic development towards his characters and allow the reader to invest deeply in the ones they identify the most with.
In my case, for many reasons, was Sam.
I don’t know if it’s because I see myself in some of his traits, or just because I found him to be so compellingly good. Or maybe, just maybe, because while watching the films, I felt that he deserved even more acknowledgment, despite him having many great moments and him being the Point of View Character in the film’s last scene (as in the books, which actually do Sam way more justice; don’t get me wrong I love the LOTR film series, but there are just some plots that give Sam way much more time to shine and grow).
Sam is in some way the character with which the audience puts their mind to, which makes you become one with him since it’s him the one that remains humanlike as Frodo starts to lose himself in the Ring.
Now, Sam becomes an assertive leader through the course of the story, after starting as a timid servant to Frodo. The phrase ‘Assertive Leader doesn’t even do justice to what he becomes, for most of the journey, if you look closely, he is the one that leads the way to Mordor, and not the other way around.
Sam slowly builds his confidence in becoming this new version of himself:
A loyal hobbit who aids Frodo numerous times and saves him from the perils of the road.
A caring hobbit who nurtures the party and with its strong motivating actions, uplifts the group to keep on going.
A determined hobbit who follows Frodo after his banishment because he knows that Frodo is in danger and will need his help.
A strong-willed hobbit who has enough strength and resistance to take the ring and follow through with the task when he believes Frodo is dead.
The bravest of the hobbits who have the courage to take on Shelob, win, and then proceed to lead himself to rescue Frodo by his salve from an Orc tower in Frikin Mordor!
And that’s not to say, that after all those dangers, exhaustion, dehydration, and much more, he still had the strength to motivate Frodo and carry the halfling on his back through Mount Doom so that they could complete the task. How fucking selfless is that? Instead of just taking the ring, he did THAT out of loyalty, respect, and tenaciousness.
All of this leads us, to what makes Sam the purest and most heroic of the characters in Lord of the Rings. Which is something the movies dwell little on, but the books develop in great detail: Sam’s strong will to resist the ring’s lustrous calling.
We know from Tolkien’s lore & the books, that the ring affects its carrier from the moment you carry it, and seeks to attach itself to its bearer if it deems him or her to be the shortest way to Sauron (the ring is somewhat sentient, that’s why it purposely fell from Isildur, and then went to Gollum, Bilbo and then Frodo, adjusting its size when it deems it and so forth… but that’s another topic for another great article).
Knowing this, we know that the ring’s power even seeks to corrupt those who are close to it, as it’s calling of power tempts even the best men, wizards, elves, and dwarves, as you can clearly see through moments with Aragorn, Gandalf, Boromir and many more.
Sam, on the other hand, has been exposed very closely to the ring, and for more time than any other, save Frodo, and never felt the temptation to snatch it. He even did not cave to temptation when he held it for 2 whole days, which is even more impressive when you take into consideration that this was while at Mordor:
“His thought turned to the Ring, but there was no comfort there, only dread and danger… The Ring’s power grew, and it became more fell, untamable except by some mighty will… He felt that he had from now on only two choices: to forbear the Ring, though it would torment him; or to claim it and challenge the Power that sat in its dark hold beyond the valley of shadows. Already the Ring tempted him, gnawing at his will and reason. Wild fantasies arose in his mind; and he saw Samwise the Strong, Hero of the Age … He had only to put on the Ring and claim it for his own, and all this could be. In that hour of trial it was his love of his master that helped most to hold him firm; but also deep down in him lived still unconquered his plain hobbit-sense: he knew in the core of his heart that he was not large enough to bear such a burden, even if such visions were not a mere cheat to betray him… ‘And anyway, all these notions are only a trick, he said to himself.” (The Return of the King, p.880-881)
With the ring in his hand, he was able to strongly resist the urge to claim, with a very humble approach based on love and logic. Which is even crazier when you take into consideration that he put it on not once, but twice (in the books), and still didn’t claim it as his. A feat non-other could brag about.
The only reason he even hesitated for a second to give it back to Frodo, was not because he wanted the ring for himself or because he felt attached to its power, but to fucking spare a weak Frodo from the burden to carry it on, since Frodo was literally on the brink of death. Sam, you selfless son of a bitch. Hard not to love the bastard, heh?
I think that just because of this, Sam has one of the biggest bragging rights on all of Middle Earth.
Oh, and something not in the films that puts Sam’s heroism on an even higher level, is that on the journey back to the shire, Sam is quite the big hero in the scouring of the shire, gaining himself even more respect from the town and his friends.
Sometimes, while watching the films or reading the books, it makes me sad how all the characters were rooting mostly for Frodo, and they barely mentioned Sam, who endured his fair share of burdens. And don’t get me wrong. I don’t mean to diminish Frodo’s actions, he did give his body and soul, every inch of it to reach the destination. And his burden is even clearer through Sam’s eyes when he becomes a ring bearer and feels the heavy burden it had, and even how stronger it felt within Mordor.
As a fun fact, Sam is inspired by a real person, and that he helped Tolkien during the war. Which makes the character even more special, and I think that’s why the story ended with him:
In the end, Sam’s special place is somewhat granted. The different endings have him be the one to bring closure to the story. Frodo left him the last pages of his book, as did Tolkien as well, since he gives Sam the very last ending in the story, the point of view in the last chapter, and the last line of dialogue in the series of The Lord of the Rings.
This didn’t happen by chance, but by his own merit. Samwise the Brave, the true hero of The Lord of the Rings
