The “How to Train Your Dragon” series has a special place in my heart, as I know it has in many of yours. It is a coming-of-age story that follows the journey of Hiccup, a Viking from the dragon-killing tribe of Berk, in his journey to find his place in the tribe and mature into the leader he was meant to be. I don’t know if it was because at times, I felt like Hiccup, or there were some of his traits that reached my emotions, but the truth is, that his relationship and growth with Toothless was undeniably a reason why this series has become part of my comfort films list. And it’s easy to see why: Even though it is not a perfect film, with nuanced & complex plot threads and characters, in its simplicity, there’s a film series about a heartwarming tale that focuses on the importance of finding one’s own courage and embracing differences.
The “How to Train Your Dragon” trilogy came to its end years ago, but, still, I wanted to create this article to talk about its characters, and how through its story, it explores themes such as friendship, love, loss, and leadership.
Finding the Courage Within…
Hiccup is initially seen as a weak and unassuming character. From the get-go, you can see how different he is from the rest of the tribe. He is physically weak and has a kind heart. He is seen as the clear misfit of his tribe, as he struggles to live up to the expectations of Stoick, his father and chief of Berk, becoming hesitant and unsure of his place in the world.
As we all know by now, his life is changed when he encounters Toothless, a Night Fury that he captured in an attempt to kill a dragon to prove himself to the tribe. However, instead of killing him, he forgives his life and forges a strong bond. learning to trust and rely on one another.
Hiccup has always had a different kind of courage, one that values life and seeks to understand the world around him. The moment of forgoing the act of killing Toothless is the key breaking point towards Hiccup finding his own way; a way that breaks the status quo of Berk, and that ultimately gains him the hearts of the people of Berk.
Throughout the ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ series, Hiccup’s relationship with Toothless evolves and becomes the foundation of the series, as the two of them mature and grow apart, ultimately leading to a touching conclusion in the third film.
Toothless, Hiccup’s dragon companion, is also an integral part of the series and serves as a reflection of Hiccup’s growth. At the beginning of the first film, Toothless is seen as a wild and dangerous creature, and his relationship with Hiccup is tenuous at best. However, as Hiccup begins to understand Toothless and his behavior, he is able to tame the dragon and forge a deep bond with him.
As the series progresses, Toothless becomes more than just a pet or a friend to Hiccup. He serves as a symbol of the compassion and empathy that Hiccup has developed over time. When Toothless is threatened, Hiccup is willing to put everything on the line to protect him, even if it means going against his own tribe. Toothless, in turn, becomes a protector and ally to Hiccup, and their relationship serves as a model for friendship and mutual respect.
The friendship between Hiccup and Toothless is cemented in one of the most emotional scenes in the series, where the two of them fly together for the first time, as together, they learn the true meaning of courage (you can read more about the meaning of this scene here). The first film challenges both to step out of their comfort zone and face their fears. Through his journey, Hiccup comes to realize that his differences are what makes him special, and he learns to embrace those qualities, leading to his growth not only as a leader for Berk but also as a hero.
The supporting cast of characters of ‘How to Train Your Dragon’, including Astrid, Snotlout, Fishlegs, and others, also play important roles in Hiccup’s growth and development. Each character serves as a foil to Hiccup, highlighting different aspects of his personality and challenging him to become a better version of himself.
Hiccup & his Family Drama…
Another key theme in the ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ series is the relationship between Hiccup and his father, Stoick. While Stoick wants Hiccup to follow in his footsteps and become a dragon killer, Hiccup’s approach to resolving conflict is different, as he seeks to understand the dragons and find a rather peaceful solution.
The tension created is showcased through Stoick’s fatherly disappointment in Hiccup, a position in which no son or daughter wants to end up in. Thankfully, based on Hiccup’s courage and his father ultimately burying his Viking pride, this disappointment is buried. However, Stoick does keep on having great expectations for Hiccup, which he still doesn’t feel he’s able to fulfill it. The truth is, there’s much of Stoick in Hiccup, than what he initially acknowledged: his courage, stubbornness, and natural leadership abilities.
As we come to know, Stoick dies saving Hiccup, before ever watching him transform into the chief Stoick was looking forward to seeing. Stoick dies saving Hiccup, based on a mistake; a misjudgment from Hiccup, despite his family’s warnings, making him feel the loss even harder. Hiccup is then forced to mature into chief, posing the next big challenge for his journey.
To counteract this loss, the story presents us with Hiccup’s mother, Valka, a dragon rider that was believed to be killed by the very dragons the Vikings used to hate. From her, Hiccup is finally able to see where he takes on his different abilities. His mother plays a pivotal role in Hiccup finally piecing out his past and the reason for how he is as he is. Despite all the similarities, Hiccup is also Stoick’s son, being the perfect balance between Valka and his father, becoming his own self, and finally attributing his upbringing to an effective leader to his unique strengths, abilities, and his newfound learning about different ways to resolve conflict.
Maturing and Letting Go…
The third film centers on Hiccup’s maturation and his ability to let go of the things he loves in order to embrace new chapters in his life. As Toothless discovers the Light Fury and falls in love, Hiccup faces the ultimate challenge of letting go of Toothless and allowing him to start a new chapter with her. This decision forces Hiccup to confront his own fears and insecurities about the future and the unknown. Ultimately, Hiccup realizes that letting go is an essential part of growth and that true love means putting the needs of others above your own.
Throughout the series, Hiccup’s character development is a central focus. As viewers, we can see ourselves in Hiccup and his struggles to find his place in the world. Hiccup’s journey from a frightened and insecure young Viking to a confident and compassionate leader is a relatable and inspiring story. His friendships with Toothless and the other dragons also serve as a reminder of the importance of empathy and understanding in our relationships.
Through Hiccup’s journey, viewers can see themselves in his struggles and triumphs. His story serves as a reminder that it’s okay to be different, to question authority, and to forge your own path in life.
